I was in my early 20s when I discovered a lump in my left breast. It could not have been more surreal. I had recently moved to a new country and I had a long list of what I had to achieve and what I wanted to do. Being sick was not one of them. For a few hours I was numbed and all my plans looked irrelevant. I had to wait till Monday to contact the doctor and I didn’t want to worry my family back home. After a sleepless night filled with fear, I’m not certain how it came to me the idea to call an oncologist in my country.
I called the doctor on Saturday morning. We talked for about 15 minutes and after advising about the next steps she said with a voice I can hear even today: “I do not think it’s something you need to worry about, but make sure to complete all necessary examinations. Most probably you would be fine.” A month or two later, following a number of appointments and medical tests I heard the same verdict from my local doctor: “You don’t need to worry”.
That phone conversation on that Saturday morning helped me to control my fears and worries and live normally for the coming months while I was going through the medical examinations.
Over the years, while I am in the middle of a complex situation I think about that phone call as my silver bullet.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I moved on to a new project to support the government in managing the health crisis. Working closely with one of the world major tech companies I realised that my silver bullet turned out to be a much more straightforward solution.
Providing affordable access to consultants and GPs within 48 hours, in a language of your choice was a project that was built over the last several months, but it has its roots on that Saturday morning call more than two decades ago.
